Short answers to what people ask most. If yours isn’t here, write to us and a person will answer.
Listening
How do I listen to a sermon?
Open Listen, choose the church and preacher, and tap the microphone. Put the phone where it can hear the preacher clearly, near a speaker if you can. Hold End when the sermon is over.
Can I lock my phone while it listens?
Yes. Listening carries on with the screen locked, and a notice stays on your phone so you always know the microphone is on. You can mark a moment or pause from that notice.
It says another app has the microphone
While you’re on a call (WhatsApp, a phone call, a video call), your phone gives the microphone to the call and HolyScribe hears only silence. Listening carries on by itself as soon as the call ends.
It says nothing was heard
No words were picked up, so no notes were written and no Scrolls were used. The usual reasons are a call that had the microphone, or the phone being too far from the speakers.
When does listening stop?
At the time you set when you started (Settings → Stop listening after). Five minutes before, you’re asked whether to keep going. If the sermon sounds finished, the app asks you; it never stops on a guess.
Verses
How are verses found?
When the preacher names a verse, or reads or quotes one, it appears from the Bible built into the app. This works without the internet. A verse the preacher only quoted is marked as quoted, so it never passes for one they announced.
Can I choose the Bible translation?
Yes: Settings → Translation. The World English Bible is the default, and the King James Version is there too. When a preacher quotes the King James, the quote stays in the King James.
Notes and Scrolls
What are Scrolls?
Scrolls pay for the parts done in the cloud: writing a sermon’s notes, Power Scan, reading photos of slides, and Ask. You see an estimate before notes are written, and you’re never charged more than the estimate you were shown. Listening, verses, the transcript and your own notes are free.
Was I charged for something that failed?
No. If notes don’t come through, or Ask finds nothing in your sermons, nothing is charged. Every charge is listed in Profile → Scrolls → Receipts.
What is Power Scan?
Power Scan listens to your whole recording again with a stronger model and fixes misheard words before the notes are written. It’s off unless you turn it on, costs a few more Scrolls, and needs Wi-Fi because it sends the recording.
How do I edit my notes or a sermon’s title?
Open the sermon and tap the pencil at the top to write in your notes; tap Done when you’re finished. To change the title, tap the title (or choose Add a title).
Ask
What does Ask do?
Ask answers questions from the sermons you kept, and shows where each answer was said, with the minute, so you can hear it again. AI can make mistakes: the sermon is the source, so check the line it points to.
Do my sermons leave the phone for Ask?
Only if you say yes the first time you ask. Then the words of your sermons (never the recordings) are kept for you, so Ask can search them. You can delete your Ask conversations at any time.
Your sermons and your phone
Where are my sermons kept?
On your phone: the recordings, transcripts, notes and marks. Settings → Storage shows how much space they use, and lets you remove old recordings while keeping their notes.
What happens if I change or lose my phone?
Backup to your own Google Drive is coming, so a new phone can bring everything back. Until then, sermons live only on the phone that recorded them.
How do I delete everything?
Settings → Your data → Delete everything. It removes every sermon, recording, note and study from the phone. It can’t be undone.
